WEEK 8

8. TROUBLE IN PARADISE, dir. ERNST LUBITSCH, 1932
____

the new year is rapidly approaching. i'm thinking a great deal in advance, making plans, etc. it's a good feeling!

my criteria for this week's film was simple: i have yet to see a lubitsch film, and so i picked the "best," or at least what is meant to be the director's personal favorite. precode, fun--the lubitsch touch for 2009.

i just finished cat people this afternoon. a little late, which i blame on the holiday week. :)

what i'm remembering most now? the light on their faces from the light boxes at their workplace (beautiful), the odd prettiness of simone simon, the endless, endless smoking!

i've started curse of the cat people--it is looking promising. did you manage to watch both?

i watched cat people the day i posted, which perhpas was a mistake, because then my week started going and i never made it to the curse. i had planned to watch them both in the same night, but realized i was too tired on monday to be able to really focus on the second...will watch it this week, though. yeah, i also thought, well, there are the early stages of the tobacco companies enlisting hollywood to do their dirty work! i really loved the feline-invoking clothes in the film, of simone simon and the other apparent "cat-person/ woman" who calls her sister in the restaurant/ club. it's another re-view, for sure.

This is a perfect Lubitsch to start with, and is probably my favorite of the ones I've seen. I also highly recommend Design for Living, The Shop Around the Corner, To Be or Not To Be, and Ninotchka (Garbo has such hilariously dead pan delivery in that one).
