werner herzog has said that the driving impulse behind his filmmaking is the simple desire to see things he has never seen before. this makes perfect sense to me.
this week, coming off the spare, quiet beauty of badlands:
something much more explicit, and i expect, in its own way, more violent--
a film about a filmmaker attempting the impossible.

i've seen this one, but not in a long time, and have been meaning to watch it again for awhile. perfect timing, as usual. there is a really wonderful moment in this film where he talks about what it meant to pull the ship up the hill in fitzcarraldo that i think about all, all the time. ever since hearing him explain it the first time, i've wanted to hear it again.
aw, shoot--i had this sneaking suspicion you had seen this before, too! i'm glad you're happy to revisit it, though. i'm jazzed. and it seemed time for a documentary. :)
yeah, i was thinking about doing a doc. last week (the gleaners and i, which we ended up watching on our own time, anyway-- i think i told you: so so good). don't ever feel bad about posting something i've already seen: there's nothing nothing i like more than watching something i've already seen. for a good film, having watched it once is like your understanding-primer. like being in kindegarten with a good teacher. there's a long way to go until graduation! when something is interesting i always, always want to watch much more than once. if anything, it's more enjoyable, because my mind can relax a bit knowing the basic plot and i can really start to notice things that totally passed me by on trial #1.
