haha. jarek's reaction to this "goddammit. she picked a movie i just saw." i however, have not seen this one. so, lucky me. he's too on top of his game to be surprised at having already seen our weekly-films, anyway.
watching susana i was totally mesmerized for the first half hour/ forty five minutes by how beautiful rosita quintana was, and then she totally lost her luster as her character was painted more and more clearly as a manipulative wretch. as much as i can see some problematic gender politics at work here, i totally totally bought into the biblical references and woman as eve/ the apple that is the death of man, etc. definitely made for complete absorption in the film, even though it isn't my most cherished way of defining woman-ness (either saintly and chaste as wife ['guadalupe, why are you kissing me like that?'] or as maliciously sexual temptress, yet also seemingly incapable of feeling real emotion or pleasure. there's alot to say here. as usual, i could go on. and on. and on.
hey! first off, i'm sorry i didn't go into length in the post itself. we had a little difficulty seeing this film--the store only had it on vhs, and we attempted to copy the vhs onto a dvd, only to find it didn't work...only to find that it did! so i only just finished watching the film this morning, right before i posted.
i agree--she is astonishingly beautiful, but i had an almost identical reaction as you did as the film progressed. i am a little worried about this feeling in me--characters like susana in films, sultry and manipulative and malicious, etc, etc, make me so angry! almost to the point where my enjoyment is compromised. i hope i am not some sort of secret puritan.
i'd love to talk more about 'susana' as i digest it. i am also very curious about how this film fits into bunuel's body of work. do you have any ideas about that?
my apologies to jarek for picking one he's seen, though i am happy we are both new to it! he and rhan both, man--too on the ball.
we watched "the face of another" some time ago and i really enjoyed it. i'm excited for this one.
i just finished it this morning too. hectic week. thought i would watch it by sunday night, but then the time change had me asleep absurdly early (had to get up for an already early work day on sunday am an hour earlier after not falling asleep til late, not too fun). so, yeah, it's fresh in my mind, but, i'm sure not entirely digested. well, they probably never are, anyway.
p.s. don't feel bad about not going into it in the post. sometimes you feel like it, sometimes you don't. totally totally reasonable. glad to see the header is starting up again. yay!
