47. THE SEVENTH CONTINENT, dir. MICHAEL HANEKE, 1989
i dropped the ball last week. i've yet to get my hands on a copy of LA CAPTIVE, though i intend to bypass netflix and rent it at the local video store tonight. discussion is definitely forthcoming.
there's a profile of michael haneke in the most recent new yorker. it got me thinking about his movies. it's also october, so i figured it might be appropriate to explore HORROR in all the meanings of the word. shall we look?

ahhhh! soooooo excited for this. so so. he is one of my favorite directors, i loooved cache, funny games, code unknown, the piano teacher... but i have never seen this one! great great pick. yay!
p.s. i'm kind of torn on la captive. i felt like i really liked it while i was watching, and then once it was all over and i started thinking about it alot, i felt like my opinion started to get muddled. jarek really did not like it, and i can't tell if that somehow compromised my opinion. though generally when we disagree, we just disagree, so maybe it brought out some doubts i was already playing around with. we both were comparing it in our heads to romance (which we both loved, i remember you and i didn't see i to eye on that one!!) -- jarek didn't think it stood up, i'm still not sure. one thing we definitely disagreed about -- i felt like i was engaged throughout and then it sort of unraveled for me at the end, and he felt like he was bored to tears throughout and then the end was the only part he maybe liked... interested to hear what you think. (and, if it wasn't clear, soooo excited for your pick this week. awesome.)
