WEEK 14
14. ROMANCE, dir. CATHERINE BREILLAT, 1999
_____
i loved i fidanzati. it was slow, quiet and sweet, and it reminded me (in the best way) of milos forman's czech films of the same era--loves of a blonde or the firemen's ball. it is honest about love. it is beautifully filmed. it is worth seeing more than once. we rented il posto, olmi's precursor to i fidanzati, but we ran out of time to see it before it was due back. no matter. next time we'll enjoy an olmi double feature.
onto this week: ROMANCE. i haven't been able to get breillat's fat girl out of my head since i saw it last month, and i'm curious about this earlier film, a watershed in her career. i anticipate a shock to the system.

i loved i fidanzati, too. i will have to see it again and again: the first time felt a big blur in terms of any plot, i felt so absorbed in the way it looked and the depth of all of the scenes (wallpaper prints and pajama prints and mirrors and doorways galore) i think alot of the subtitles slipped by me while i was busy looking at other parts of the screen. sometimes i wish i spoke everyother language solely for film-watching reasons, but other times i think needing to read the subtitles changes things in a positive way, makes me very aware of the need to re-watch.
excited for your choice this week. i've wanted to see fat girl, too, for awhile. jarek has seen them, but i haven't. it's proving hard to find something he hasn't already seen...
i totally understand. and you know, i was thinking after reading your comments here--i feel like the internet phenomenon of screencaptures has affected the way i watch movies. i fidanzati was full of potential screencaptures...i hope i'm not watching with an agenda.
the opening scene at the dance was wonderful. even the titles were beautiful!
and as far as jarek having seen everything, i sympathize, too. rhan has seen everything! i am determined to catch up :)
we just watched breillat's the last mistress (haven't gotten romance yet, though).
besides being appalled at asia argento's absurd and apparent breast implants not working too well with the period piece in which she was star,
i thought it was great.
also watched frozen river
and did not like it
at all.
p.s. i had to google 'screen capture' and find what it meant on wikipedia. my lack of computer/technological knowledge is sort of appalling, even to me. so is that how rhan gets those great photos from film and tv? amazing. i actually was just picturing him in front of the paused screen with a camera shooting away, which is probably not at all how he does it?!
