WEEK 40
40. MODELS, dir. ULRICH SEIDL, 1999
i saw animal love a couple weeks ago. i really liked it, if one can say they really liked a film about people and their deeply dysfunctional relationships with their animals, and with themselves.
models may not be as traumatic a watch...
i am only partly through our last film. it has been extremely hot and we are (reasons financial and political, the lack of funding works well with environmental ethics in this particular case!) air-conditioner free. the fans aren't cutting it and i've been loathe to be inside. however, pretty into what i saw before the heat drove me out of the house and into the lake. will finish it up tomorrow and add-on, i promise!

excited for this! i have no ideas about it whatsoever. this is great.
it's been cooler the past couple of days here, but we i can certainly identify with the paralyzing heat and lack of air conditioner. we broke down some time ago and installed one in the bedroom, but the rest of the apartment, where our work desks are, becomes intolerable during the summer months. all i can say is that the kaurismaki is work the heat, at least in my opinion. we promptly downloaded a collection of his film music, which is great fun.
here's to good films and cooler weather.
ps: forgive the errors in that last comment. hasty work.
just finished it. yes, totally worth the heat. i really loved nikander's character, his lack of facial expression, next to ilona's periodic and intriguing half-smiles. the tying together of work-life and inner-life... what was keeping nikander from going to find ilona late in the film: "horror, fear & this job" -- sums up the film to me -- simultaneously things are defined and left wide, wide open. my kind of thing. great pick, juliet! hope models delivers as well...
our car is in the shop now so we can't go sit in a theatre, and it's too absurdly hot to go outside, so i think today is a "pretend-we-have-ac-and-have-a-movie-marathon" type of day. let you know how it goes! xx
